Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Can anyone help me with this
With what?
Are you asking about which auxiliary to use, what tense, or both?
On that first question, look at the verb. If it has a direct object, you use « avoir »; if not, use « être ».
« Je suis retourné de la guerre (I came back from the war) »
–> « de la guerre » is not an object of the verb « retourner », it is a complement adding info from which state I have returned. I can safely eliminate that and it'll still be grammatically correct.
« J'ai retourné la poubelle (I turned over the rubbish bin) »
–> « la poubelle » is an object of « retourner », describing what it is that had been turnt over. I can't eliminate that without it losing meaning; what did I turn over?
