Asseoir is a transitive verb that takes an object. It means "to seat (someone)".

J'asseois mon enfant sur le banc = I seat my kid on the bench
Assoir is just a spelling variant of asseoir. Both are valid.
S'asseoir (and s'assoir), on the other hand, is a reflexive verb, meaning the subject performs and receives the action.
Je m'asseois sur le banc = I seat myself on the bench = I sit on the bench

thank you so much, thats really helpful. i suppose when doing exercises there isnt much context so ideally i would have needed the sentence to get the correct form
