Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Donc is more formal but that doesn't mean it's only used formally, they're mostly synonymous but you'll see donc used more for stuff like math proofs for example
It still gets used casually
it's best to not think of them as both meaning "so", but rather that donc means "donc" and alors means "alors"…
They don't just translate English directly.
