Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Since you had said just 'sorry', your friend assumed it was the second one hence why she said « pardon ». Did you mean 'sorry' as in 'I'm sorry that he didn't come' or 'sorry' as in 'Excuse me, sorry!'?
