Works more or less like the verb to seem in english. It is regularly followed by another verb in the infinitive

Le sens est différent, mais ça ne s’entend pas avec le verbe plier (plié / plier, même son)

ouais je viens d'essayer avec les deux orthographes et je vois les deux différents sens

"paraissaient plier" est une action continue qui est en train de se faire au présent
tandis que
"paraissaient pliés" est une action déjà faite dans le passé et on fait simplement une constatation
