You mean something like:
« J'ai commencé à boire plus de thé que de café. »
« Il a décidé de partir. »
« Tu te bats pour faire quoi ? »
Yeah unfortunately, that's a memorisation game. The preposition choice depends on the verb preceding it. Ex:
(1) décider takes « de »
« J'ai décidé de l'aider. »
(2) hésiter takes « à »
« J'hésite à l'aider. »
(3) espérer takes nothing
« J'espère l'aider. »
For « pour », though it does appear after some verbs like « se battre », it has a clearer definition where it's used to express purpose:
« J'ai décidé de faire son travail [pour l'aider]. »
(I've decided to do his work [in order to help him / for the purpose of helping him]. »
