there are some tendencies but not much that's reliable enough to be worth actually relying on in general

the only one I personally use is that -tion is pretty much always feminine

np! usually people learn the word with the article (le/la) but if it's something that starts with a vowel (l'eau) or is mainly/always plural, it can be helpful to add in an adjective that clearly marks the gender, for example "l'eau douce" (doux being the masculine form)
