Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

The young French seem to love calling everyone frère (brother). It's very informal and some people might be offended.
I use copain, and people in the south of france use collègue a lot. Both can mean friend (not limited to).

I'd say we stay mostly formal with strangers, but that might be cultural and so it could be different depending on the context/place.
