froid per se is like an adjective and here its basically used to describe to catch a cold
the noun would be more like "rhume" i suppose
le rhume
but back to your question, you dont need an article cuz its a phrase "prendre froid" is "to catch a cold"
There are some fixed expressions where nouns don't take an article. « prendre froid » is an example but another – way more common – example would be « avoir peur, avoir froid/chaud »
