"du" is a partitive adverb, indicating an undefinite amount of something.
with adverbs of quantity, you don't need to indicate the quantity, as the adverb is already taking care of it. So you don't have to use an article, just the preposition "de"

another way to think about it is that beaucoup already requires de ,because you can't say beaucoup chagrin, but you also can't say beaucoup de du chagrin, and if you say beaucoup du chagrin that (remember that du = de le) that sounds like beaucoup de le chagrin, so you have to just say beaucoup de chagrin
