The sentence says "because he was - he knew it well - very likeable", referring back to Sammy himself.

And the "quand même" is used for emphasis, it's the equivalent of saying "no less than four" in English, or adding "impressively" to the sentence. Sammy is proud of his performance at work.

It sounds like Sammy works in sales and his job is to sell some kind of subscription or pass. I think "placer quatre abonnements" in this context means "to sell four passes". Three were "real" sales while one was due to his being likeable. Not sure what that means exactly.
