Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
you can say « bonjour » only during the day-time (i.e. basically whenever the sun is up), whereas you can say « salut » during any time of the day
also, « salut » is more informal than « bonjour »
you'll most definitely use it with your friends and family, but never with a stranger or your boss for example
on the other hand, « bonjour » is casual and can be used with anybody no matter the formality of the situation
by the way, if the sun isn't up, you can say « bonsoir » instead of « bonjour » in this case
