When a sentence is turned into a negative one, indefinite and partitive articles turn into "de".
J'ai une lettre => je n'ai pas de lettre
J'ai de l'eau => je n'ai pas d'eau
There's one exception: the verb être.
C'est un problème => ce n'est pas un problème
However if you want to make a contrast, there's no change:
Je n'ai pas un chat mais deux.
Je n'ai pas de l'eau mais de la limonade.
