fait in this context is 'in fact' where fact is pronounced with a t

fait (il fait) and le fait (the fact)
the same as 'est' (unpronounced: il est; pronounced: east)
The "t" in "fait" is never required, but is more common in certain expressions depending on region (and forbidden in certain cases)
