Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

the choice of which preposition to use depends on the verb and the specific construction.
some verbs use no preposition, some use "à", some use "de", "en"...

#

some can also use multiple depending on the function.
play a game => jouer à un jeu
play an instrument => jouer __d'__un instrument
play a role => jouer un rôle

#

while the choice ultimately depends on the verb, there are some useful patterns you can use. For instance, verbs of communication majoritarily use "à" to introduce the person you're communicating with (parler à, demander à, ...)

no i meant pronouns

#

like for example

#

Je prends le stylo

#

becomes

#

Je le prends

#

or Elle a telephone a john

#

becomes

#

elle lui a telephone

#

because telephoner can be written as telephoner a quelqu'un

@pastel apex
the choice of the object pronoun is based on the preposition used, yes.
if the object is direct (no preposition) you have to use a direct object pronoun, like "le/la" (je vois le chemin => je le vois)
if the object uses "à", you have to use either "lui" for people (je parle à quelqu'un => je lui parle) or "y" for places/concepts (je suis à l'école => j'y suis)
if the object uses "de", you have to use "en" (je joue d'un instrument => j'en joue)
