Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
What are you trying to say, exactly? 'Rude test' makes no sense to me without additional context.
There is the expression "mettre à rude épreuve" (to put through the mill). Aside from that, I don't think there's any context that uses rude épreuve.
Maybe something like : "C'était une rude épreuve qu'il a surmonté avec courage".
