[1] This is the partitive article which describes an uncertain number of something, almost always « du/de la/des », depending on countability.
[2] This is an expression of quantity so it's « de » and never « du/de la/des » unless it's specific.

The tricky bit is knowing when something is a partitive or when something is just a bare preposition because they're formed similarly. I'd like you to read this article to get a better grip on it:
