Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
its french
its how it is
thats also the same word for mother in law
but step-mum, if allowed by her can just be mom
If you're curious on why, "belle-mère" was a term of affection that eventually became a standard word. Before it was "marâtre", which is pejorative nowadays
"belle" does mean "beautiful" so you’re totally right but in the phrase "ma belle-mère" it refers to a stepmother or mother-in-law. In French beau and belle are used in compound nouns to indicate a family relationship by marriage or step-relations:
Belle-mère, beau-père, belle-sœur, beau-frère
Thank you!! I’m glad i know this now
if you want to hit on your mother in law you need to say “ma belle belle-mère”
