Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
I never noticed that the pronunciation changes and I am pretty sure I came accross some of those conjugations before, is there an IPA or something to help me notice the difference between the two pronunciations ? The [ell]/[ull] explanation doesn't really do it for me since English is not my first language.
They mean that the pronunciation of the "e" before the T or L changes when the consonant is doubled.
For example, the bold e in these conjugations doesn't sound the same:
-
je jette ==> /ʒə ʒɛt/
-
nous jetons ==> /nu ʒətɔ̃/
-
je m'appelle ==> /ʒə mapɛl/
-
nous nous appelons ==> /nu nu zapəlɔ̃/
