Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
That's not negation, that's the ne explétif. « nul doute que » isn't covered in that article but it exists if you look at a dictionary like CNRTL :
nul doute que. [Avec ne explétif et le subj.]

Your counterfactual conditional doesn't work for the condition clause, « si la qualité de sa coque fût supérieure … »
This is the subjunctive and you don't put it in that clause. « avait été » is more appropriate.
