« pendant que, alors que » mean ‘while’, not ‘although’; that is better translated as « bien que/quoique » or if you’re not comfortable with the subjunctive, « même si ».
« durant » is a synonym for « pendant », without the « que ». French adds the conjunction « que » after certain prepositions to mark a new clause, so you can think of « pendant que » as ‘during which’ if it that can help, but personally I’d separate « pendant » and « pendant que ».

I struggled with this for a while but now I fully understand.
Pendant que is a time conjunction. This means that you’d say « Mon prof parlait pendant que je lisais le livre ».
However, alors que (and tandis que) are about differences. They bring out the contrast.
