first of, you have to understand the difference between definite and indefinite articles.
Definite articles are used when you are referring to a specific instance of something. It is usually but not always translated as "the".
"le" is for a singular masculine noun
le village => the town
"la" is for a singular feminine noun
la ville => the city
"l' " is for a singular noun starting with a vowel (masc/fem)
l'arbre => the tree
"les" is for a plural noun (masc/fem)
les enfants => the kids
Indefinite articles are used when you are reeferring to any instance of something. It is usually but not always translated as "a" or "an" for singular and no article or "some" for plural
"un" is for a singular masculine noun
un village => a town
"une" is for a singular feminine noun
une ville => a city
"des" is for a plural noun (masc/fem)
