This is largely a France thing (potentially belgium/switzerland too but I feel like I remember some exceptions?)
In Canada we generally don't add a space (except for before : where it's required - though casually it is often ignored too) as it's supposed to just be a thin non-breaking space, and most people either don't have that character on their keyboard or can't be bothered to use it. You'll occasionally see québécois add full spaces though, usually from influence from France
