Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
avenir is more when you're talking about what a person will become: Pense à ton avenir, fais des études !
futur is more general
Avenir is more in relation to a person or within one's lifetime, while futur is often something you won't necessarily live to experience
I'd say in most cases avenir will work
In quebec we use futur more or less synonymously with avenir but I'm not a huge fan
