"coup" is part of lots of idiomatic phrases, including "coup de fil". If you translate "coup de fil" literally it means "a line hit" and comes from a time when all phones were wired. But of course, being an idiomatic phrase, nobody registers it like that when they hear it. To native speakers it just means "a phone call".
"coup" when used idiomatically usually denotes something fast, sudden or unexpected. You'll notice that in the list of phrases mentioned in the link I shared.
