Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Quel + noun = what [among others]
Qu'est-ce que isn't followed by a noun

#

What was the question?

late sundial
#

The correct answer was Qu'est-ce que

#

And for this one, the correct answer was Quelle

Quel is followed by the object of the question or the verb

#

Quelle couleur tu préfères ? (subject: tu, object: couleur)

#

Qu'est-ce que tu préfères ?

#

it's not very precise im sorry

Quel is used when you are referring to a noun. Par exemple, quelle est ta nationalité.
Par contre, qu'est-ce que is used with another verb. Par exemple, qu'est-ce que Maria aime faire? (Here, Maria is used as the subject)

Can quel(le) be followed by anything but être in terms of verbs? I can't think of anything

hmm

#

only some "verbes d'état" (i think they called it like that in school)

#

Quel semble être...

Ok yea that was my only guess but the verbes d'état I could think of didn't feel like they worked

#

So

Quel - which of a limited (though potentially large) number of items :

  • As an adjective (directly before a noun)
Quelle pomme est-ce que tu veux manger?
Which apple would you like to eat?

  • Before être (Which or what is x [out of a limited choice])
    Quelle est ta nourriture préférée?
    What is your favourite food?

Qu'est-ce que - Asking about the nature of something, or the inanimate (non-human) object of a sentence :

  • Before a noun (asking what the item is in its essence)
    Qu'est-ce qu'une pomme?
    What is an apple?

  • Before a clause (asking what the inanimate (non-human) object of the sentence would be)
    Qu'est-ce que tu manges?
    What are you eating?
