Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
For verbs that take « avoir »
(1) If there's a direct object after the verb, no agreement
Ex: « J'ai pris une fleur. »
(2) If there's a direct object before the verb, agreement to the OBJECT
Ex: « La fleur que j'ai prise / Je l'ai prise (la = la fleur) »
(3) If there is an object but indirect, no agreement
Ex: « J'ai parlé à Michel / Je lui ai parlé »
For pronominal verbs
(1) If there is only the reflexive pronoun and nothing else:
(a) For transitive verbs (takes a direct object), agreement to the SUBJECT
Ex: « Elle s'est vue. »
(b) For intransitive verbs (takes an indirect object), no agreement
Ex: « Elle s'est parlé. »
(2) If there is an object in addition to the reflexive pronoun:
(a) For transitive verbs, the reflexive becomes indirect and behaves exactly like an « avoir » verb.
Ex: « Elle s'est cassé la jambe / Elle se l'est cassée. »
(b) For intransitive verbs, the reflexive becomes direct and so there is agreement to the SUBJECT
Ex: « Elle s'est adressée à lui »
