I'm not sure of the exact terms (I think "attributive" might get used in some contexts)
but it's one of the functions of indirect object pronouns

Thanks @mortal spear - I was wondering if I changed LA joue to SA joue if that would be more correct. But basically the sentence needs to identify it's his cheek, not just A cheek?

tbh there's not much of a difference

I guess that sometimes with body parts there's a tendancy to not use son/sa/ses
and instead to attribute the action to the entire body
like with "je me brosse les dents"
