it's when a normally silent final letter gets pronounced as the first sound of the following word.

For example, "les" is pronounced "lay". The sentence "les femmes" sounds like "lay fam".

But when "les" is before a word that starts with a vowel, that final "s" gets transfered to the next word, as a "z" sound. So the sentence "les amis" is pronounced like "lay zah mee".

In other words, there is a liaison between "les" and "amis".
