In fact, the person leaves clues and you study them in order to follow the trail to the origin.
There's also "remonter la piste (de qqun)".
Remonter means go to the origin. So you use à with the verb.
Remonter à l'antiquité = go back to ancient times.

cause if its track down i dont get the use of à with it
It's the same verb for both, so you use à in both cases.
The taggers are the origin, and you go back to it. So there's the idea of tracking them down, following the trail to them.
