Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

I would say "merci de m'aider" in two situations:

• To say "please follow me"

• And to say "thanks for helping me at this very moment"

For example, if I'm moving to a new place and my friend is currently helping me with it (say we're both carrying a couch right now for example), I can say "merci de m'aider, c'est sympa"

But an IGer sent me a message saying "merci de me suivre" after I followed her.

This seems odd to me.

I guess my interpretation is "thanks for having followed me" 🤷

or are you just talking about this behavior in general? to say thanks after someone followed you?

to me it could only mean "please follow me"

Could be a regional difference
