Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
There are 2 major different uses for the preposition « de »
The first one is linking a property to a noun
« tempête de neige » -> storm of snow -> snowstorm
The second one is used with an article (le/l'/la), and is used for uncountable things (among others, but let's focus on that for now)
« Je veux du riz » -> i want (some) rice (because "rice" is uncountable, "i want rice" also works in English, but "some" helps show what's going on in French)
« Je veux **de l'**argent » -> i want (some) money
« Je veux de la confiture » -> i want (some) jam
« Je veux des abricots » -> i want (some) apricots
Without an article, it feels like the 1st use, a quality or property of something
« As-tu d'espace » doesn't work, it feels a bit like it would mean "Do you have of space?"
« Un manque d'espace » -> a lack of space, that's the right way to use « d' » on its own
Ohhh okay thanks you for you detailed explanation. It really helped me. Thank you thank you
