Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

to respond to - répondre à

« J'ai répondu "oui j'arrive" » - I responded "yes i'm coming"

« J'ai répondu à ma mère » - I responded to my mom

« répondre à » can also be "to answer" so that may be why you're confused

« J'ai répondu à ma mère » - I answered to my mom

Actually both can probably be "to answer" in the right context
