Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Both sentences are wrong; you’re supposed to use « quel » and « quelle ».
Here’s how to know when to use each one:

« Quel » and its other forms (« quelle », « quels », and « quelles ») are interrogative adjectives. Since they are adjectives, they modify nouns, meaning that when you use them, you’ll see the noun that they are modifying right after them.

Par exemple…

  • Quel cahier est le tien ?
    • (“Which notebook is yours?”)
  • Dans quelle classe tu es ?
    • (“In which class are you?”)
  • Quels moyens de transport vous utilisez ?
    • (“Which methods of transportation do you use?”)

On the other hand, « lequel » and its other forms (« laquelle », « lesquels », and « lesquelles ») are interrogative pronouns. Since they are pronouns, they replace nouns, meaning that when you use them, you’re referring to a noun that you previously mentioned.

Par exemple…

  • Voici les stylos. Lequel tu voudrais utiliser ?
    • (“Here are the pens. Which one would you like to use?”)
  • Il y a beaucoup de chaussures. Lesquelles sont les plus chères ?
    • (“There are a lot of shoes. Which ones are the most expensive?”)
  • Parmi ces trois motos, laquelle vous achèteriez ?
    • (“Among these three motorcycles, which one would you buy?”)

Just remember that « quel » means “which”, while « lequel » means “which one”.

|| Note: « Lequel » and its other forms are also used as relative pronouns. ||
