Rien - nothing
It's pretty much if you are using "anything" in a negative sense, then you want 'rien', if you want it in a positive sense, then you want n'importe quoi.
Je ne vois rien - I don't see anything / I see nothing
Nous pouvons faire n'importe quoi - We can do anything
But
Nous ne pouvons rien faire - We can't do anything
I would say this comes with a massive caveat of 'I think' but I am fairly confident
