imo i havent heard natives say mon ami in this context and like in english, its rarely used.

As in english, it can be. Given certain contexts, it will often be treated as such, but saying "salut mon ami" shouldn't ever be.
as in english, if I go with some sort of 101 explanation and I end it with "my friend", it is pretty clear what I'm thinking of you, i'm saying by using "my friend" that you're dumb not knowing something everyone should know.
