They are synonyms, but "âgé" is 'softer' than "vieux".
It isn't very polite to say "vieux" about somebody, so we say rather "âgé" especially for people. A good example is "une personne âgée".

e. g. politicians talk about "les personnes âgées"

as you are talking about yourself you don't need to soften your speech
