Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"if i were to lie about this, i would say xyz" = "si je voulais mentir à propos de ceci, je dirais xyz"
perhaps "si j'étais à mentir à propos de ceci", to be consistent with your original sentence
Only the first part of that is right, the reasoning being that the two sentences actually describe different things.
In English, the condition (if X) actually takes the subjunctive which is usually just the bare verb with the consequence (Y) being a modal + the verb.
In French, the condition is the imperfect while the consequence is the conditional present.
If I were to tell you, you would have to shut up.
Si je te disais, tu devrais te taire.
