Connaître is for knowing or being familiar with a person, place, or thing

Savoir is to know something or how to do something

That's generally the rule, although they are interchangeable in very specific scenarios. A website I found says this:

Savoir is linked to "hard knowledge" while connaître is for things you are familiar with like mystique said, like you would never say "je sais un bon restaurant", you say it like "je connais un bon restaurant". On the other hand, "je sais faire des équations" and never "je connais faire des équations". In English, you would always use "know" for this

There is some overlap on their meanings depending on the context as mentioned, but it will take some getting used to

If the meaning in English you want to convey is "knowing about a topic or how to do something" you go with savoir, if you want to say "knowing, as in being familiar with someone or something" you go with connaître
