dont is a relative pronoun meaning literally something like “of which”. The important thing is that it’s used with a relative clause that would use de (of). So if you were talking to someone about a friend of yours and you ran into that friend you could say “Là, c’est l’ami dont je parle”
où is just where, but as a relative pronoun it’s used for time more often than in English
