Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

It's weird. First off, is this translated from another language ? If not, is there some sort of regionalism at play (quebec or other) ?

By default i would go with : don't do/say anything crazy or stupid

Yep, translated from English

Probably a case of poor translation I'd imagine.

Fantasy novel from the 80s. Roger Zelazny, le signe de la licorne.

The original

#

So yeah, poor translation

fathom acorn

Yep. Thanks!

#

Sigh. Should have thought of looking at the original

Don't worry about it 👍 . But as a general note, older sci-fi novels didn't benefit from the best translations in general (really low budgets)

Good to know! I'll have to try to find french language books to read - up to now I've been mainly reading books I read when younger

What publisher is your book from, out of curiosity ?

Éditions Denoël

(on aussi working my way through Discworld)

Discworld should be good, l'Atalante had a great translator for it. The quality should be way better

It is.

#

pieds d'argile is next.

#

It's bizarre. I'll be reading asking no problem, then get to one of the philosophical discussions and spend so much time trying to understand a page.....

I'm not a discword specialist, but i believe the writing is pretty rich, it makes sense it would be hard sometimes. FYI, the same translator did the black company, with l'Atalante too. Also very good.

Absolutely. Plus he lives his word play.
