Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

They're pronounced the exact same way. But you'll generally have the pronoun (since French isn't pro-drop) and context to tell you which it is.

You'd have to look for context. It could just be one person eating; unless you here words like ensemble, autour de la table, chez lui/elle. Essentially, listen for clues. And when you're involved in the conversation, you can ask clarifying questions like "combien des personnes mange?"
