Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

The passé composé deals with events that tend to have a clear start and finish.

J'ai dormi.
I slept.

The imparfait is more incomplete.

Je dormais.
I was sleeping.
If you'd use 'was + verb' in English, then it's often (but not always) the imparfait in French.
