Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Rentrer = to go home
Retourner = to go back [somewhere] (requires an object)

Rentrer can be used for "to go home" in basically any context
Retourner implies you are not currently at home at the time of saying it, and requires clarification (retourner chez moi). It sounds much more like you're on a long-term trip to me.
