you're right, here the distinction matters, and the agreement changes based on whether the pronoun is direct or indirect. That said, there is no way to know that without knowing whether the construction you're using is direct or indirect.

"Je vous ai demandé de ne pas bouger" (demander à quelqu'un) mais "Je vous ai demandée en mariage" (demander quelqu'un en mariage)
