A: Pro life tip: drop expectations. Don't expect anything from anyone. Also not friends. Just be yourself, and enjoy life. Go through town and feel 'alive', do your daily things. Yes, I guess that includes chores. Accept that everyone lives their own life, respect other people's choices and things they deal with no matter how big or small they are. Be able to listen. I guess tl;dr: What makes me happy is that I feel like I understand life lately, and I feel part of the world. If you don't feel you are part of the world, seek that feeling. It'll make you happy.

A: When I found Terraria, and became interested in modding, the main reason people used tModLoader at the time that both tModLoader and PRISM were in their early stages was that making a mod in tModLoader was easy to start. At the time, I couldn't find information on how to actually make a PRISM mod, and neither could anyone else, so that really hampered adoption. The hurdle to get started was too much.

A: We are working hard on it. A lot of modders have stepped up and helped a lot with the patches. Now we are working on re-designing a lot of things that are weird, since we want this new generation of tModLoader to not have programming/design baggage. We're not sure when it'll be complete, but we'll have a period where modders will have a month or so to give feedback. The goal is to get it right so we don't have to make any breaking changes in the future that would cause incompatibility between 1.4 mods.

A: The whole terra weapon concept isn't coined by Thorium to begin with, it's Terraria itself that has the Terra Blade, after all. We just expanded on that at first, and other mods did the same/followed suit.
Q: What's the biggest obstacle for Thorium team when working together?
A: The never-ending agony Developers not being on at the same time to have a proper meeting about future plans of the mod, in my opinion, it puts stuff to a halt quite often.
Q: Your favorite/underrated item in vanilla terraria and why?
A: Tall Gate, probably, cool big door that can also let mounts through most of the time; don't see it often enough in builds. I would love more varying types of it.

A: Artwise, it means that we have to basically look over the whole mod and try our best to re-adjust to the slightly updated artstyle. Thorium has many items, new and old. The old ones are really starting to show it, so with the 1.4 mod reboot, it means going through everything just to make it match. Fun!

A: The way the Dungeon generates would sometimes lead to massive amounts of the Depths being eaten by the dungeon. So we moved it to the other side to be nicer to world gen.

A: Of course, a good portion of the bosses need some work since they were made when I was much less familiar with coding / game design.
Q: Where did you got your name from,or atleast an inspiration
A: My name comes from two furniture items in Animal Crossing; ‘Diverman’Dan and Spaceman’Sam’. I just mixed the two since Samson is my real name.
Q: Compared to other content mods such as Calamity and Spirit which are always updating and expanding, Thorium is widely and colloquially considered "finished". Do you think the advent of 1.4 will provide reason for Thorium to significantly update or expand its content, or will it be a simple port of the mod as it stands?
A: The mod itself isn't actually "finished", but it is in a super slow mode. I just don't have the time I used to to update and add to it. It's in my plans to go nuts on the 1.4 port and really bring new life and identity to the mod. It won't be a simple port, I can assure you of that. 👍
Q: Why does Thorium add 3 whole classes?
A: I think adding new classes adds a lot of replayability to the game. Since it’s my goal to get people to play Terraria, more classes usually work.
Q: thoughts on fargo's souls?
A: Incredibly fun idea for a mod, and a ton of work goes into it for sure. My only issue conceptually is the cheaty nature of “infinite power”. More power to the players though, who like becoming in-game gods.
Q: How many years have you been playing Terraria? Do you play it often, or do you just develop Thorium?
A: I’ve been playing since week 1 of it’s release and have about 7,400 hours total.

A: Not as complicated as it seems compared to fighting him, but the disjoint between the attacks makes some damage unavoidable unless your flying away at mach 5 speed. Pretty hectic all around.
Q: What boss do you consider "finished" in the thorium mod? And what boss will change the most in future updates?
A: The Viscount for sure. Good attacks, music, arena, design, etc. I think he’s our best “boss” for sure.
Q: what do you think of journey's end in general?
A: I have my issues with it for sure… I love the QoL changes, and the sprite upgrades, but many of the actual gameplay decisions are baffling to me. I DO NOT understand the removed idea of negative torch luck, cracked dungeon blocks blocking everything, and the Cactus/larvae interactions. It made two of my favorite biomes, two of my least favorite...

Q: What’s your favorite class? Modded included.
A: Bard, having used to play Lord of the Rings Online, where you can play instruments with a group and basically just jam, I always wished to have something similar to that in Terraria (as Starbound essentially did), and Thorium made that sorta happen. Once I get some free time again, I might try to make a similar system as to Starbound with .abc files or something to be able to play automatically, as a separate project to Thorium.
Q: Will you add more revengence mode support from calamity like AI changes?
A: Both Thorium and Calamity are doing their own things atm, once both are finished, or Thorium is and Calamity doesn't have any big plans going, we (Thorium) could look into this more. There's no rush for us to have it added, though, they are quite different mods in the end.
Q: How do you handle the work load of making a big content mod?
A: Take breaks when needed, and try to enjoy what you're doing. If you're doing something just to please the masses, the content is usually of lower quality since you're not enjoying yourself in making it. Additionally, just try to find people who think the same in that regard, almost everything is more fun with friends.

Calamity comes as a good second, though, as I do like large crafting trees and such, and the content in it is still amazing. My third adds onto the point above, large crafting trees, making it Fargo's Mod(s).

A: It's not something we have discussed, as far as I remember. So we can't really say anything yet, but we'll likely just fill in the gaps of vanilla in addition to keeping it logical-ish, something we'll have to discuss.

A: I feel a lot of mods try to follow Calamity's formula, and whilst it's a successful formula, I would prefer if people tried their own, something unique rather than following other mods' formulas. I would love to see some more unique worldgen, or UI stuff (maybe in combination with NPCs, think Thorium's Tracker)

A: On its own, I think we’ve done a phenomenal job with balancing for as many items and mechanics as there are. We’re always at work making it as clean as we can. Cross mod balance is another issue though, specifically when DR is involved. It gets kinda messy there.

A: Back in the tConfig days I added a boss known as “the shades”. In the current mod there's an enemy known as the smothering shade which is a reference to that boss, where essentially 5 of those would attack you. Wasn't a great boss.

A: Mostly VG music and soundcloud chiptune artists like +Tek, HaruMKT, etc. I also like 80s music

A: That'd be something to discuss amongst the devs, but I doubt we will, it's not really Thorium's thing to modify vanilla that much, but maybe we'll change our minds for Master Mode specifically

A: I do think there's room for another invasion in the game, but it would be placed in a pretty small spot. Could be seen as bloat, but not if I handle it correctly. I wanted to add a water invasion, but the Spirit Mod beat me to the punch on that one. 😛

A: Personally I prefer the crimson because of the layout and crimson rod.

Q: why were primordials called ragnarok originally?
A: It made sense to me at first to name our last boss the ragnarok since the mod is called The Thorium Mod. Thorium = thor = ragnarok, yunno. But it makes no sense given the actual ragnarok and it’s creatures like Jormungandr and Fenrir.
Q: If you had to add another biome, what would it be?
A: I’ve always wanted to add a mountain biome or something. The original, undeveloped idea was to replace one of the oceans with a large rising mountain with cave systems similar to the lihzahrd temple in layout that lead to a boss or chamber of some sorts. It's not currently in development though.
Q: Can you give any hints on upcoming class reworks?
A: I can’t give out too much of a hint, but the Healer will be quite soloable when I’m finished with it. You can expect some big changes that make it far more coherent as a single defined class and not 2 ½ half-baked ones.

Q: How would you improve the vanilla game?
A: I really do think the cracked dungeon blocks just slow the game down in unnecessary areas. I would only keep them as a wall to hidden rooms, but when it’s a wall to the rest of the dang ol’ dungeon, it just slows things down in an otherwise exciting biome. I think otherwise the game is in a pretty good spot, although I sort of dislike the reliance on wings. I think other movement options would help a lot for variety.
Not to ramble on, but Pre-hardmode is my favorite part of the game because I don’t feel like I’m cheesing anything and exploration actually matters and takes some time. I like problem solving an area with ropes, torches, glowsticks, platforms, any accessories I have etc. All of that dies in hardmode though, which really bums me out when you fly around unleashing death everywhere. I think keeping some focus on exploration somehow would help the game in my opinion. I know many people just see Terraria as a boss rush game though, which I wish wasn't the case...

A: There certainly is plans for some more world Gen. There's an unobtainable music box in the mod that gives a hint towards something that’ll sit right beneath the bottom of the Aquatic Depths...

A: Hopefully, yes. Largely depends on energy, time, etc. Understand that I work on the mod as often and as hard as I can.

A: Accessories that require you to get hit, aren't damage mitigation related, and work on chance sound absurd to me if you plan on playing expert or master mode.

A: Probably the Borean Strider. In his current form, he isn't much of a boss alone. He would really work better as a blizzard mini boss like the martian saucer of pirate ship.

To a new player, her existence probably won't seem out of place amongst the other town NPCs, but her personality and dialogue seem awkward to me having played the game since the beginning. It’s hard to explain.

Q: What is your favorite type of cheese? Personally I like Triple Cheddar Mexican blend in a double friend chicken cutlet in a softly baked soft tortilla and a few dollops of ketchup, sometimes with pepper. Alternatively, I could add gouda or swiss, but those are just a little too sharp for me. Also, can you describe what you use your cheese for? With cheese being so versatile, I can see you using it for at least 91 purposes for lunchtime alone.
A: I personally prefer some aged Gouda on toast, simple yet delicious. I use my cheese for many things, on bread, cheese fondue, and of course for cheese magic.

Q: what's your opinion on terraria general art style and which item is your least favorite in terms of spriting?
A: Hard question to answer, but I think I do like the visuals in Terraria. I think it's easy to tell what's going on compared to other games with it's palettes and outlines. My least favorite item visually is probably the Cactus Sword, though It makes me laugh lol

A: Tracker is probably my favorite, I like me a good ol' quest, and the UI was fun to make, albeit difficult for me at the time (Jofairden did most of the hard work in the end 🤡 ), this was before Gadget Galore, tho, which helped me a lot with UI knowledge. My least favorite is probably the Weapon Master, he always felt off to me.

For today’s AMA, we have a very special guest joining us here today! We’re very grateful to have this opportunity today but before we begin; we’d like to introduce our guest before we open up the channel for questions!
MrGameTheory aka MGT is the Community Manager for Terraria at 505 Games. He is also a Brand Community Manager at 505 Games managing other exciting titles. He spends his days making sure the various Terraria communities across all platforms don’t implode and that Terraria remains the absolute best Discord community in the world! He is the Father of the TCT, Memes Over 9000(#memes-over-9000), daily Discord stats(#discord-leaderboard), and even co-authored the official Terraria Lore(#terraria-lore). He is also the first person to defeat Moon Lord, on mobile and Nintendo Switch, without debug! Prior to joining 505 Games he was an FA with Morgan Stanley and a professional Civilization player for Team Liquid where he held multiple world champion titles. MGT also loves many genres in gaming and he has completed close to 1000 games so far!
