@eternal beacon mediumcore is a sort of in joke among terraria as a whole. Hardcore offers a challenge and makes terraria a sort of rougelike, softcore? Money isn't the end of the world. But imagine getting to a celestial pillar event or getting absolutely savaged by everything in a similar situation and losing your entire kit. Armor and accessories are expensive af in terraria and if you lose it and can't get it back thats likely around 7-12 hours of effort gone. The world becomes nigh unplayable because of difficulty scaling, and it becomes a grind to struggle your way to a reasonable kit again. There is no reason to ever play mediumcore, despite it sounding like it should be the default option from the name.

Metal armor often requires an absolute ton of bars, and thats a lot of ore. Ore that has a demmanding pickaxe requirement in a world full of enemies designed to be a threat for a much stronger player

And quite a few people, though it is honestly the worst version, at least when it comes to price of admission to enjoyment ratio
