The only thing coming to mind that would generate that error is a ill-formed xnb file.
That generally happens with resource packs when people don't realize they can just use png files & don't have to convert to xnb.
Since you say you're not using any resource packs though, I'd try a full delete/reinstall

Kill any mechanical boss and have the steampunker move in. I reccomend the Detroyer, since you said you were having trouble; the Destroyer is really easy to cheese. Then, buy the clentaminator and spread the purification
