Hello everyone!

Recently, there has been a renewed push for taking a community pass at our localizations to improve their quality/accuracy/etc. While all our supported languages are localized by a professional organization/company, errors can and do occur. These primarily fall into a few core categories:

  • Lack of context clues leading to bad translations – simply put, the translators are not necessarily (or likely to be) Terraria players, so they will misunderstand some things.
  • Grammar/Flow issues – the words may be correct, but the way they are put together is less than ideal
  • Typos – needs no explanation
  • Font issues and UI overflows

In a game this vast (Terraria has over 75,000 words per language already!), the more eyes we have, the better – especially since most folks at Re-Logic are not fluent in most of these languages!

This collaboration between the development team and Terraria community aims to give each of you a chance to voice these concerns so that we can make our localizations the best that they can be. We conducted this process once before way back in the 1.3 era, and it was a huge help to everyone – so we are hoping for a repeat performance! Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide!

First, let us set some expectations.

  • Outside of Korean and Japanese, which are already slated to be added in 1.4.5, we are not tackling “add more languages” at this time.
  • Suggestions will be reviewed by Re-Logic's professional localization team. The localization team may not accept every suggestion, especially those that are particularly subjective.
  • Improvements to translations will most likely release with 1.4.5.
  • Debates over the gender of unique Terraria names (proper nouns) will not be sustained.

How can you contribute?

  • Send a DM to @proper rune to request talk permissions for the feedback channels.
  • Look at the pinned suggestion document for the language to see what feedback has already been given.
  • Make suggestions and participate in discussion in the channel. An editor will combine your suggestions with the main document.
  • If you have a large number of suggestions, consider making your own copy of the suggestion doc and posting it in the channel.
  • Approved editors MUST have some sort of established presence, such as history on the official Terraria Discord, the Terraria Community Forums, or similar. There will be a limited amount of editors, but if you believe you meet the criteria to be added as an editor, feel free to send a message to @proper rune.

Advice for working together smoothly

  • There will be some spots where an honest debate can be had as to which is the proper translation, our hope is that such debates can take place quickly and civilly and resulting in a singular suggestion.
  • Please stick to the columns provided in the template. If a translation has multiple issues, they can be noted separately or together.
  • Please prioritize your suggestions and avoid nitpicking. It's better to leave the original translations as is if they're clear, than to have heated opinionated debate.
  • The goal of the suggestions is to fix instances where a reader would be confused or jarred. Resource packs can continue to provide more opinionated translations.
  • Prefer ease of reading and commonly understood terminology across games, over 'technically correct' or 'dictionary correct' translations.
  • Reasoning in the documents can be provided in the translated language when required, but English is preferred.
