How about boosting abilities based on the stats?
I mean.. for ex. attack stat having impact on the dmg dealt by an ability, vitality stat having impact on healing abilities, arm stat having impact on shielding abilities, speed stat having impact on move speed boosting abilities? Ofc everything in a balanced way. This would take choosing the build of ur char to whole new level. At least that's how i feel. Ppl who like offensive style would build with pure attack equipement and would be rewarded with more dmg from ability (not only weapon dmg as it is now) for lack of sustain. Apoths would go vitality to make their healings even more effective. Then you would even think which pet to choose to fit the stats of it well to ur build. OFC dusts taking into account too.
